"I woke up this morning feeling creative..."

Ok, so, here's the deal: I was getting ready for uni, stationery and all that kaboodle, when it occured to me that I ought to go out and get a pencil case (some negative thoughts did cross my mind such as 'do uni students actually have pencil cases?' but were quickly dismissed). After much pencil case seeking (and disappointment) I was coming to the conclusion that I would not find my perfect pencil case at Kmart, Woolworths, Nextra, Officeworks, etc... (that list goes on) so, I decided that, perhaps, I should make my own pencil case. I ran the idea past mum and she, after she finished laughing and was assured I was serious, gave me a few pointers on how to sew it all together.
First stop: Lincraft, I needed material and a zip. I picked brown tablecloth material (the word 'durability' popped into my mind at that point and explains the tablecloth - the colour brown was because I didn't want to be a show-off....) Of course, the brown tablecloth that I wanted was hiding under a table, and appeared to have been hiding there for quite some time. So long, in fact, that when it came to cutting the material, the lady behind the counter and I discovered that it was full of dead cockroaches! (A discovery that quickly and decisively put an end to Lincraft Lady's mad laughter at my apparently silly pencil case dream)
Don't buy tablecloths from Lincraft.
Second (and I suppose, er, final) Stop: Home, to cut out a design and stitch it all together. Now, this may seem a simple step, but let me tell you, it took up the best part of my afternoon. There was a lot of drawing, cutting, pinning, stitching and inadvertant piercing; but in the end it all worked out, rather, awesomely fantastic! It actually went really well, I am very pleased with the results and even surprised myself at the quality! Who knows, I may just set up my own pencil case business later in the year....

  1. I have got to say, that is a very impressive pencil case. My uni buddies would be green with envy.
